This is a case report of a 48 year old female patient, who has unfortunately lost many of her teeth at this young age due to Pyorrhea (Periodontitis). The remaining teeth were also moving and were not in good shape. She was very disturbed with her unattractive smile and was equally sad about her inability to eat properly with her painfully shaking teeth.
To treat her it was necessary to remove these remaining teeth also, and than give her a new set of teeth.
A new set of teeth can be a removable complete denture or can be a fixed teeth set at dental implants.
She was obviously not interested in removable dentures since they are very uncomfortable and at times very embarrassing also. She was very keen to have fixed set of teeth on dental implants because fixed teeth on implants are not only very comfortable and effective but also looks beautiful like natural teeth.
So she consulted many dentist for dental implant treatment, but unfortunately because of lack of sufficient bone in upper jaw ,it was difficult to place implants.
There were still two possibilities which could make it possible to place dental implant in her upper jaw. First is to make new bone by a procedure known as bone grafting. Bone grafting can lead to new bone formation. But the problems with bone grafting are that the amount of new bone formation is very limited, it takes months to form bone, it takes another surgery in mouth to take bone graft from either chin or other parts of jaw, than sometime bone graft can get infected, or it’s rejected . And above all it’s expensive.
Second option was to use special implants known as Zygomatic implants and Pterygoid implants. These implants use cheek bone and bone present in back side of upper jaw. So the advantages are that we don’t need bone grafting , we don’t have to wait very long, there is no extra surgery to harvest bone graft and there is no unpredictability like bone grafting. Only requirement is that the dental surgeon must ne an expert in placing Zygomatic and Pterygoid implants, preferably an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon like Dr Sankalp Mittal. So this case was referred to us for Zygomatic and Pterygoid implants and other implants as well.
Following pictures will show you how her life was changed with a new fixed set of teeth on dental implants in spite of having deficient bone in upper jaw.
so you can appreciate that with help of dental implants and specifically with the use of Zygomatic and Pterygoid dental implants, she could get a new set of fixed teeth with 2months. Now she can have a broad smile and can eat whatever she wants.
